Propane Tankless Water Heaters

Propane Tankless Water Heaters — On-Demand Hot Water Without a Gas Line

Propane tankless water heaters are the practical choice when natural gas isn't available. Rural properties, cottages, off-grid cabins, and remote worksites across Canada run on propane — for heating, cooking, and now hot water. A propane tankless unit connects to your existing propane supply and delivers endless on-demand hot water without a storage tank.

This collection covers Camplux propane tankless models from 2.64 GPM up to 5.28 GPM, in both indoor and outdoor configurations. All units are available in liquid propane and are CSA-certified for Canadian residential use. If you're on the natural gas grid and looking for city-home options, see the Natural Gas Tankless Water Heaters collection instead. Why Propane Tankless Makes Sense for Canadian Off-Grid and Rural Properties

Propane burns at a higher energy density than natural gas, which translates to a practical advantage in cold-weather conditions: propane tankless units can maintain output at lower inlet water temperatures than equivalent natural gas units. For a cabin in northern Ontario or a rural property in Alberta where winter inlet temperatures drop to 2–5°C, that difference is real.

The other advantage is fuel consolidation. Many rural and off-grid properties already run propane for the furnace, range, and generator. Adding a propane tankless water heater means one fuel source, one supplier, and one delivery schedule — rather than managing a separate electric water heater that draws from a limited solar or generator capacity.

For properties with no grid power at all, propane tankless is often the only practical on-demand hot water option. Electric tankless units require significant amperage — a whole-home electric unit draws 100A or more — which is impractical for most off-grid electrical setups. A propane tankless unit needs only a small 12V DC connection for the ignition and controls.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Propane Tankless — Choosing the Right Installation Type

Indoor propane tankless units require a dedicated exhaust vent to remove combustion gases from the living space. Camplux indoor units use a sealed combustion system and must be vented through an exterior wall or vertical flue per Canadian building code. Installation by a licensed gas fitter is required in most provinces. Indoor installation is the right choice when the unit needs to be protected from weather year-round and when a venting run is feasible.

Outdoor propane tankless units mount on an exterior wall and exhaust directly into open air — no interior venting required. This is a practical option for cabins and properties where cutting a vent through an interior wall isn't feasible. The tradeoff is cold-weather exposure: outdoor units must be drained and protected from freezing when not in use during Canadian winters. For seasonal properties that are closed in winter, this is a straightforward winterization step. For year-round use in cold climates, indoor installation is generally preferable.

The 5.28 GPM outdoor model ($1,299.99) is the high-output outdoor option — suited to larger cabins or properties where multiple fixtures need to run simultaneously. The 4.22 GPM indoor unit ($699.99) covers most residential needs for a two-bathroom cottage or rural home.

Sizing a Propane Tankless Unit for a Cottage or Rural Home

The right GPM depends on how many fixtures you expect to run at the same time and what your inlet water temperature is. For a seasonal cottage used in summer, inlet temperatures are moderate and a 2.64 or 3.60 GPM unit handles most needs. For a year-round rural home in a colder province, size up — winter inlet temperatures reduce output, and a unit that performs well in September may struggle in January.

• 2.64 GPM (68,000 BTU) — Climatech 3 entry model ($389.99). One bathroom at a time. Suited to a small cabin or secondary suite with low simultaneous demand.
• 3.60 GPM (82,000 BTU) — Climatech 3 mid-range ($439.99) and standard 3.60 GPM ($599.99). A two-fixture cottage — shower and kitchen tap running at once.
• 4.22 GPM (102,000 BTU) — Climatech 3 high-output ($499.99). Two to three simultaneous fixtures. The right choice for most two-bathroom rural homes.
• 5.28 GPM — Indoor gray and white ($913.99). Larger homes or colder regions where inlet temperatures drop significantly in winter.

Winterization and Cold-Weather Considerations for Canadian Properties

For seasonal properties that are closed in winter, winterizing a propane tankless water heater is straightforward: shut off the propane supply, open a hot water tap to relieve pressure, and drain the unit using the drain plug or by blowing out the water lines with compressed air. Most Camplux indoor units drain fully when the inlet is depressurized.

Outdoor units are more vulnerable to freeze damage and should be drained before any period of non-use in freezing temperatures. If the property is used year-round in a cold climate, indoor installation with proper venting is the more reliable long-term setup.

Propane itself performs well in cold weather — unlike some fuels, propane vaporizes reliably down to approximately -42°C, so fuel supply is not a concern in Canadian winter conditions. The main cold-weather variable is inlet water temperature, which affects the unit's ability to raise water to the desired output temperature at a given flow rate.

What to Know Before You Buy

All Camplux propane tankless water heaters in this collection are CSA-certified for Canadian residential use. Gas appliance installation in Canada requires a permit and a licensed gas fitter in most provinces — check with your local authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) before proceeding.

Propane and natural gas units are not interchangeable without a conversion kit. If you're ordering for a propane supply, confirm you're selecting the liquid propane variant at checkout. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a propane tankless water heater work completely off-grid?
Yes. Camplux propane tankless units require only a small 12V DC power source for ignition and controls — a standard RV battery or small solar setup is sufficient. The heating itself is entirely propane-powered. This makes them a practical choice for off-grid cabins and remote properties with no grid power.

How much propane does a tankless water heater use?
Usage depends on flow rate and how often hot water is drawn. A 4.22 GPM / 102,000 BTU unit running at full output consumes roughly 1 litre of propane per hour of continuous use. In practice, a tankless unit only fires when hot water is actively being drawn, so actual consumption is much lower than a continuously burning tank heater.

What's the difference between the Climatech 3 series and the standard models?
The Climatech 3 series is optimized for stable residential performance across varying flow rates. The standard models cover a wider GPM range and include outdoor configurations. Both are CSA-certified and available in propane.

Do I need a regulator for my propane supply?
Yes. Camplux propane tankless units require a standard two-stage propane regulator on the supply line. Most residential propane systems already include one. Check with your propane supplier if you're unsure about your existing setup.
